Manchester United legend Roy Keane blasted Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk as ‘arrogant’ and ‘disrespectful’ after the Dutch defender accused the away side of negative tactics in the goalless draw at Anfield.

Liverpool had 34 shots – 16 more than they racked up in a 7-0 win in this fixture last season – but could not break down Erik ten Hag’s stubborn defence. And Van Dijk accused United of setting up for a bore draw, saying Liverpool were the only team trying to score.

‘How we played the game, having most of the ball, there was only one team that was trying to win the game, unfortunately it didn’t happen,’ said Van Dijk. ‘We were superior in all aspects. They are buzzing with a point and we are disappointed.’

It prompted Keane into a furious tirade on Sky and he said: ‘A lot of arrogance coming out of Van Dijk disrespecting United like that. Maybe that bit of arrogance backfired. He said only one team came to play. United are up against it. Sometimes players need a reminder.

‘It’s arrogance. You still have to go out and do it. That’s what the great teams do. Liverpool have won the league once in 30 years. We played Liverpool many times when they were struggling. You find different ways to win a football match.

‘United had one or two chances. I thought they were under pressure, they sat in and played to the strengths they had to. Arrogance comes into football where you’re disappointed with a draw. The most important stat is the scoreline.

‘Liverpool had opportunities and they didn’t take them. That’s their own fault, nothing to do with how Manchester United set up or their injuries. I think he’s out of order.’

Former Liverpool striker Sturridge stated his belief that van Dijk didn’t disrespect United but was instead frustrated with his own team’s performance.

Sturridge said: ‘I don’t think he did, I don’t think he dissed Man United. I think every footballer around the world has respect for Man United.

‘I’m not going to say he’s dissing them. I just think he’s disappointed Liverpool didn’t go out there today and do what they thought they would be able to do.’

Maybe Arsenal might come and try and win the game.’

United were eager to avoid a repeat of the 7-0 thrashing they suffered against Liverpool last season, with Erik ten Hag’s side looking far more secure defensively on this occasion.

Although they were reduced to ten men late on when Diogo Dalot was sent off, it was still a largely positive evening for United as they managed to emerge from Anfield with a point.
