Max Verstappen has stated that setting up a GT team is ‘his goal’ after retiring. The reigning world champion is contracted with Red Bull until the end of the 2028 season but has offered no guarantees that he will stay in the sport beyond that deal, instead stating his desire to sample motorsport outside of the world of F1.

The 26-year-old is currently enjoying his very own era of dominance, akin to the one that Lewis Hamilton experienced with Mercedes during the turbo-hybrid era. Verstappen won 17 of the final 18 Grands Prix in 2023, breaking record after record as he clinched a third successive Drivers’ Championship crown.

Despite this unprecedented success, the noises from Verstappen’s camp have often been ones of frustration and discontent this season. The Dutchman has vehemently opposed F1’s continued experimentation with the sprint race format, and during the Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend, he took no prisoners as he made clear his objection to the glamour of the event.

These murmurs of discontent have led to speculation that Verstappen could retire from F1 when his contract expires at the end of the 2028 season, especially if Stefano Domenicali and his team continue to experiment with ideas unpopular with the reigning world champion.

Speaking to Blick about the possibility of managing his own GT team after retiring from F1, Verstappen said: “That is my goal. I don’t necessarily want to race myself, but I want to build something big and give talent a chance.

“That does not mean that I want to guide them to Formula 1, but I want to help them take steps in motorsport. In motorsport, there are so many racing classes where you can have fun and be successful. As a professional racing driver, you can also make a living from that, not just from F1.”
