Mary Earps wins the 70th BBC Sports Personality of the Year<\/h3>\n

Piers Morgan has launched a furious attack on the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards after Mary Earps was crowned this year\u2019s winner. The England Lionesses goalkeeper has become the second women\u2019s footballer in succession to win the award.<\/p>\n

Earps has been in flying form for club and country this year, with her impressive performances seeing her finish fifth in the voting for the Ballon d\u2019Or and being named England Women\u2019s Player of the Year.<\/p>\n

The Manchester United shot-stopper also won the Women\u2019s Super League Golden Glove for the 2022-23 campaign after keeping 14 clean sheets, whilst also proving an equally impressive force on the international stage when helping the Lionesses to their first World Cup final and winning the Golden Glove at the competition.<\/p>\n

However, Morgan was left bamboozled as to why the 30-year-old was crowned Sports Personality of the Year given that she \u2018hasn\u2019t won anything\u2019, following Beth Mead\u2019s victory last year.<\/p>\n

He took to Twitter\/X to write: \u201cTrying to get my head around two of England’s women footballers winning BBC SPOTY in successive years\u2026 while male sporting superstars with great personalities like Rory McIlroy, Frankie Dettori and Ronnie O’Sullivan have never won it.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo offence to Ms Earps, but shouldn’t it have been given to someone who actually won something in 2023?”<\/p>\n

  England cricketer Stuart Broad was awarded second place at the ceremony, with world heptathlon champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson coming third. Wheelchair tennis player Alfie Hewett, golf star McIlroy and jockey Dettori were also shortlisted for the public-voted award.<\/p>\n

  Speaking after her success, Earps said: \u201cI feel a bit sick actually! I’m humbled to be on a list of incredible athletes. It’s not been the easiest journey and I wouldn’t be where I am today without such incredible people in my corner. In 2019, after the World Cup, that was the last time I played for England. I stayed out of the England team for quite some time. All these happy memories of the game that I loved didn’t make any sense anymore.<\/p>\n

  \u201cIt felt like I had lost my purpose in life. If Sarina hadn’t called me up, I never expected to play for England again. There was a time in my life where I thought I would never put on an England shirt again and suddenly I am representing my country at a World Cup. I just feel so grateful that I was able to play for my country on the world stage and enjoy it as much as I did.”<\/p>\n
