Richard Keys accuses Fernandes of getting deliberate yellow to miss Liverpool

Bruno Fernandes picked up a Premier League suspension on purpose in order to avoid facing Liverpool.

That's the suggestion made by former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys, who has criticised the Manchester United captain in the wake of his latest display. There wasn't a United player who impressed during Saturday's embarrassing 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth, but beIN host Keys has picked out Fernandes in particular for his display.

Or at least one very specific part of his performance after the Portugal playmaker was shown his fifth yellow card of the Premier League season for dissent late on against the Cherries. And Keys is convinced he was attempting to draw referee Peter Bankes' ire on purpose.

"For the avoidance of doubt I’ll say it again. Fernandes knew he’d miss the Anfield game if he got a yellow," the 66-year-old wrote on X (formerly Twitter). "He didn’t want to play in it. 0-3 down & he has a tantrum. Captain? Leader? Others should be calling him out on it."

Many suggested United's skipper was fortunate to remain on the field at all following a second incident shortly after his caution. But the end result remains largely the same, with Erik ten Hag missing one of his key assets for the visit to Merseyside.

And it's not like United can afford the miss given how their most recent trip to Anfield panned out. Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo each grabbed a brace apiece as the Red Devils went down 7-0 in a hellish display back in March.

Ten Hag's midfield is already missing several prominent figures as Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Mason Mount have each missed large portions of this season. That's in addition to the injured duo of Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia, while Jadon Sancho has been unavailable due to discipline issues.

United remain sixth in the table for the time being but are some 10 points and five places below leaders Liverpool, who have won their last 11 games at Anfield. As if the current pressure on Ten Hag wasn't high enough following Saturday's humiliation against Bournemouth, another humbling on Merseyside without Fernandes may crank things up another notch.
