Glenn Maxwell injured in freak golf cart accident
Glenn Maxwell injured in freak golf cart accident in major blow for Australia at the Cricket World Cup with allrounder set to miss England game
- Glenn Maxwell will miss Australia’s game against England
- He injured himself after falling off a golf cart
- Maxwell is under concussion protocols
Australia’s record-breaking all-rounder Glenn Maxwell will miss the game against England on Saturday after suffering concussion falling off the back of a golf cart.
Maxwell, who last week thrashed a 40-ball century against the Netherlands in Delhi – the fastest in World Cup history – was standing on the cart as it drove back to the team bus following 18 holes in Ahmedabad on Monday.
He will be out for six to eight days, opening the door for either Marcus Stoinis or Cameron Green to take his place against England.
‘It rattled everyone once we came to the conclusion there was a concussion and he was going to miss a game,’ said Australian head coach Andrew McDonald. ‘There was nothing untoward in the behaviour throughout the day: it was a clear-cut accident and unfortunately it’s compromised what we are doing as a team.’
Maxwell, who has also been bowling tidy off-breaks, was ruled out for five months last year after breaking his leg slipping at a friend’s party.

Labuschagne had been tipped to be replaced by Stoinis, if proven fit, or Cameron Green for the fixture against England.
Maxwell’s absence also robs captain Pat Cummins of a bowling option with the offspinner taking four wickets so far in the tournament.
Maxwell’s middle-order batting power will also be sorely missed – he smacked the fastest World Cup century, from just 40 balls, against the Netherlands on October 24.
The Victorian followed that record feat with 41 from just 24 deliveries in Australia’s five-run win against New Zealand last Saturday.
Australia, with three group games remaining, are fourth in the overall standings and in the box seat to secure a semi-final spot.
After meeting arch-foe England, the Australians play Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
