JOCKEY TO FOLLOW

Ryan Moore has plenty of ammunition headed by the exciting short-priced favourite CITY OF TROY (Newmarket, 2.00) in the Dewhurst Stakes. His Aidan O’Brien-trained stablemates CHIEF LITTLE ROCK (Newmarket, 1.25) and GASPER DE LEMOS (Newmarket, 3.15) both look big players and Moore is an eye-catching booking for Gordon Elliott’s Cesarewich Handicap hope PIED PIPER (Newmarket, 2.40).

TRAINER TO FOLLOW

William Haggas is the top trainer for winners at York over the last five years and he will be hopeful of success at the track’s final meeting of the season, particularly with MONTASSIB (York, 2.25), a strong-finishing fifth in the Ayr Gold Cup, LA YAKEL (York, 3.35), who showed improvement on his last run at Doncaster, and the lightly raced STAR AHOY (York, 4.45), who looked like he needed his recent Sandown run on his first start after a break since being gelded.

BIG DAY FOR…

Apprentice CHRISTIAN HOWARTH, 21, who was on the books of Sky Bet League One side Cambridge United when he was younger, is booked to ride the ex-Aidan O’Brien-trained WORDSWORTH (Newmarket, 2.40) in the Cesarewitch Handicap. The five-year-old was a very easy winner of a Bangor maiden hurdle last time out on his first run for the David Pipe stable.

WHAT’S IN A NAME

PENDLETON (York, 2.25) Named after the Lancashire village in the Ribble Valley rather than Victoria, the golden girl of British cycling who tried her hand at racing with an ambitious amateur jockey challenge which ended with a ride at the Cheltenham Festival.

WATCH OUT FOR…

STARLORE (York, 1.15)

Looked the likely winner of the 7f Solario Stakes at Sandown only to fold in the final few strides as he was squeezed out of the places. The drop back of a furlong on a track which plays more for speed should suit the Sir Michael Stoute-trained son of Kingman.

HORSES FOR COURSES

KNAPPERS HILL (Chepstow, 3.10) has won all his three races at the track with two of those wins coming at this meeting.

TRAINER TARGET

Paul Nicholls has won the Champion Hats Juvenile Hurdle at Chepstow five times in the last 10 years. He runs French import LIARI (Chepstow, 1.55).

PERFECT PARTNERS

Ryan Moore has ridden 12 winners from 39 rides for Clive Cox to show a £1 level stake profit of +£6.85. He rides JAMES’S DELIGHT (Newmarket, 4.25) for the trainer.

BEST RACE FOR FAVOURITES

Seven favourites have won the Dewhurst Stakes (Newmarket, 2.00) in the last 10 years.

TOP PRIZEMONEY EARNERS

CHEPSTOW: 3.10 KNAPPERS HILL — £261,824

YORK: 2.25 SUMMERGHAND — £601,307

Best Bets – By Steve Ryder

The Cesarewitch Handicap has been dominated by National Hunt horses in recent years and I am hoping that the enigmatic Goshen (Newmarket, 2.40, nap) can capitalise on a lenient Flat racing mark.

The Gary Moore trained seven-year-old is infamous for his last-hurdle catastrophe at Cheltenham in 2020 but his handicap rating of 88 may underestimate his ability.

He finished only a neck behind the re-opposing Tritonic at Goodwood a year ago off a mark of 87 and he is only 1lb higher in this race. The rain will boost his chances and he was in good form over hurdles when last seen in April.

In the Group Three Darley Stakes, Knight (Newmarket, 3.50, nb) should hold strong claims of going one better than at both Goodwood and Sandown. The gelding has proven form on soft ground unlike his main market rivals and is weighted to win on ratings with his elders.

The Wizard of Odds – By Chris Baker

2.25 YORK

MAGICAL SPIRIT (each way) has some good recent form over today’s course and distance. His last two wins have been on soft ground and he looks to be well drawn.

3.50 NEWMARKET

KNIGHT has filled the runner-up spot in each of his last two races, including in the Group Two Celebration Mile at Goodwood. He should relish the testing conditions.

5.00 NEWMARKET

PERDIKA (nap) won two Listed races in France earlier this year and finished an excellent second to Highfield Princess in the Group One Prix de l’Abbaye two weeks ago.
