For years on end, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have been battling it out for the title of the greatest footballer in the world, with many divided on who the real GOAT is.
Messi and Ronaldo shared the stage for more than a decade at the pinnacle of football – largely on either side of the Barcelona-Real Madrid divide – and picked up several accolades along the way.
The two sporting icons have amassed an impressive 13 Ballon d’Or awards between them and scored a total of 1,465 goals while representing their various clubs over the years.
There is a level of respect between the two players, with Ronaldo previously stating: ‘Hatred? I don’t see things like that, the rivalry is gone. Those who like Cristiano Ronaldo don’t have to hate Messi and vice versa. We’ve done well, we have changed the history of football.’
However, that hasn’t stopped their team-mates from discussing who the real GOAT is over the years – with many sitting on either side of the fence. But, now their loyalties have been laid bare.
