After a testing couple of days for Manchester United, Erik ten Hag's side came away from their clash against Chelsea with three important points, defeating the Blues 2-1.

It was midfielder Scott McTominay who bagged a brace to win the game for United, with both of his goals coming either side of Cole Palmer's strike for Chelsea. However, for two teams who were battling it out for the Premier League title years ago, this game was a real reminder of just how far off United and Chelsea are from competing with the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool.

And with that in mind, Daily Star Sport took a look at three of the reasons why both of teams won't finish in the top four come the end of the season, using their clash at Old Trafford as evidence…

    Zero control

It's no coincidence that the best two teams in the Premier League over the last two seasons have been Manchester City and Arsenal. Yes, City have the wealth of a gulf state behind them, and also arguably the greatest manager of all-time, but it's not as if Chelsea and Manchester United don't have massive resources available to them either.

So with that in mind, what the defending Premier League champions and Arsenal do better than any side is control games, something which neither Chelsea or United can do effectively.

Every game is chaotic. Sure, it's exciting, it's end to end, but the constant transitions leave both sides open on the counter far too often.

Had Chelsea had more of a cutting edge, they could have won this game. Instead, their front three of Nicolas Jackson, Mykhailo Mudryk and Raheem Sterling looked apprehensive in front of goal. Speaking of being apprehensive in front of goal…

    Lack of cutting edge

Both sides are lacking a cutting edge. Even Bruno Fernandes, who is usually as reliable as they come from the spot, had a penalty saved by Robert Sanchez! Thankfully, Scott McTominay knows where the goal is. Both United and Chelsea had plenty of chances, but were unable to convert them.

If either team want to find themselves in the Champions League next season, they need to be more clinical in front of goal, especially with clear cut chances. And speaking of taking clear cut chances…

    Misfiring strikers

Rasmus Hojlund and Nicolas Jackson may very well turn out to be excellent Premier League players in time. But right now, they are both project strikers.

Chelsea forked out over £30million to bring Jackson to Stamford Bridge, while United paid a whopping £72m to Atalanta for Hojlund, who scored nine goals in Serie A last season.

So far, the latter has failed to find the back of the next in the Premier League, whilst Jackson has scored six times – with three of those goals coming in Chelsea's 4-1 win over Spurs last month.

On Wednesday evening, Jackson missed a simple one on one with Andre Onana, whilst Hojlund was subbed off for Marcus Rashford late on in a game that really didn't see him given too much of an opportunity to score. The reality is, Tottenham, Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City, Newcastle United and Aston Villa all have more proven goalscorer up front that both Chelsea and United, something which could cost them dearly come the end of the season.
