4 hothead moments from Guardiola v Klopp era as Man City battle rivals Liverpool

Manchester City vs Liverpool has become must-see viewing since Jurgen Klopp joined Pep Guardiola in the Premier League.

The pair were fierce but respectful rivals in Germany – Guardiola with Bayern Munich, Klopp with Borussia Dortmund – and that has transferred over to England, with the pair regularly complementing each other in the media. However, that respect does not apply to the sets of supporters, where genuine animosity has developed.

That is why Saturday’s game is a lunchtime kick-off rather than a teatime one. Adding to the spice has been the fact Liverpool have been the side most likely to challenge City's domination of the last decade, winning the league in 2020 and running Guardiola’s side desperately close on other occasions.

Therefore, the result of the matches between the sides is often crucially important in the title race. With so much as stake, sparks have usually flown, with the two managers at the centre of the action…

Mane’s kung-fu kick

Back in September 2017, still the early days of the Klopp regime, Liverpool travelled to the Etihad with high hopes. However, those hopes were effectively dash in the first half when Sadio Mane was sent off for a wild head-high challenge on Ederson. City when on to win the match 5-0 and the league in style.

Guardiola rages at ref

The Man City boss was left incandescent after having a string of strong penalty appeals turned down at Anfield in November 2019. After a third shout was rejected, the Spaniard got the in third official’s face and waved three fingers in the angriest of fashions.

After the game, which City lost 3-1, Guardiola went over to shake the hands of the officials, including ref Michael Oliver. However, there was nothing friendly about the handshake as he said “thank you so much” in the most sarcastic manner imaginable. It proved to be a key result as Liverpool went on to win league, a rare break in City’s era of dominance.

Pep rages (again)

Last season at Anfield, Guardiola was doing his nut again, this time over a disallowed goal by VAR. Pep knew what was coming once the official was called over to his monitor and had already started raging. Then, once the goal had been ruled out, he gestured sarcastically up into the stands, to the amusement of Liverpool fans.

Klopp sees red

The same game but the other manager as Klopp lost the plot after a foul on Mo Salah wasn’t given. The German got right in the face of the linesman who’d been nearest the incident, earning himself a red card from the ref.
