Ajax v RKC Waalwijk suspended after goalkeeper is involved in horrific collision
RKC Waalwijk goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen is now conscious after he was involved in a horror collision that saw Saturday’s match against Ajax called off.
Waalwijk goalkeeper Vaessen collided with Ajax striker Brian Brobbey after rushing out to claim the ball and was left motionless on the ground in the 84th minute of the Eredivisie game.
Medical staff immediately rushed onto the pitch to treat the 28-year-old with stewards holding sheets aloft to shield the player while he was attended to.
Members of both teams were left visibly distraught with some in tears as Vaessen received treatment before being stretched off.
De Telegaaf report Vaessen was resuscitated on the pitch and was taken to hospital where he is now regained consciousness.
Waalwijk have now confirmed their player is awake and in hospital undergoing further tests.
‘We are extremely shocked by the incident on the field with our goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen,’ a statement from the club read.
‘We can announce that, after extensive medical examination, he is conscious and has been transported to hospital for further examination.
‘We wish Etienne a lot of strength and strength and hope to have him with us again soon.’
RKC Waalwijk director Frank an Mosselveld added: ‘Etienne Vaessen was approachable while he was put into the ambulance.
‘He totally forgot everything that has happened. We witnessed something very serious but I want to give a big compliment to the medical staff who immediately reacted.’
Ajax had been leading 3-2 when the match was suspended.
