Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir has been backed to shine by Turkey boss Vincenzo Montella if he is forced into action this weekend.

Andre Onana is a doubt for United’s meeting with Everton due to a pelvic injury sustained while playing for Cameroon, meaning Bayindir – signed from Fenerbahce for £4.3million in the summer – could make his debut at Goodison Park in the Premier League on Sunday.

Bayindir replaced the injured Ugurcan Cakir soon after the half-hour mark in Turkey’s 1-1 draw with Wales and the 25-year-old made an excellent impression, making one particularly fine save from Brennan Johnson in the second half.

‘He did very well in our games against Germany and Wales,’ said Montella. ‘He is a young goalkeeper and I expect and hope that he can get great experience at United. I hope he can play first-team football which will give him even more experience and then he’ll be even better when he comes back to us.’

Onana was substituted late in the 3-0 victory over Mauritius on Friday and the Cameroon FA confirmed he had withdrawn from the squad for Tuesday’s match against Libya.

Onana returned to the UK on Sunday night after withdrawing from the Cameroon squad. He will undergo medical tests with United staff this week before a decision is made about whether he is available to face Everton.

United boss Erik ten Hag also faces an anxious wait over Marcus Rashford, who limped off as England picked up a 2-0 win over Malta.

Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, Jonny Evans, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund are all currently out injured.
