Arsenal backed to sign Ivan Toney in January as Gabriel Jesus dealt snub
Arsenal have been backed to raid Brentford for Ivan Toney in the January transfer window. Formers Gunners academy star Jay Bothroyd says the Bees forward would score more goals than Gabriel Jesus if he made the move to north London.
Toney is currently banned from playing for breaching FA betting rules. The 27-year-old was slapped with an eight-month suspension in May to rule him out of the first half of this season.
He will be able to return to training with Brentford on September 17 but won’t be allowed to play until January 16 next year. Only two players scored more goals for Toney in the English top flight last term.
Bothroyd appeared on this week’s episode of Sky Sports’ Saturday Social. The panel rated each Premier League team’s No 9 from A to E.

Bothroyd, who never played a first-team game for Arsenal, made it clear he was a big fan of Toney by giving him an A rating. And he insisted he would love to see him move to the Emirates, claiming he would net more than current Gunners star Jesus.
The one-cap wonder said: “[Toney’s] an A for me, he scores goals, he’s prolific, he’s strong, he leads the line really well. If you put him in one of the top teams he will score at least 20 Premier League goals per season.
“Great on penalties, penalties he’s unbelievable. If you took him to someone like Arsenal, I would love Arsenal to sign him now. I think he would score more goals than Jesus, than Ollie Watkins, in the Premier League.”
Toney has 32 league goals for Brentford since their promotion to the top flight in 2021. Jesus has just 20 goals in the same period of time, taking into account his final season at Manchester City and his first year and a bit at Arsenal.

Jesus was not a regular starter for City and also missed three months due to injury in his first campaign at Arsenal. He is yet to start this season after returning from minor knee surgery.
Toney, meanwhile, revealed his admiration for Arsenal in his first interview since his ban last month. He admitted he is a Liverpool fan but also has a soft spot for Arsenal.
Toney told The Diary Of A CEO: “Yeah, I’ve been a Liverpool fan my whole life but from young, I’ve liked Arsenal. I’ve liked watching Arsenal. I like how they play and kind of how passionate the fans are.”
