Arsenal chief Edu can make transfer masterstroke with ‘Slovenian Haaland’ Sesko

Premier League season after 10 games as Spurs lead from Arsenal

Arsenal have reportedly sent scouts to monitor RB Leipzig wonderkid Benjamin Sesko as they look to beat out competition from Manchester United for the 20-year-old, who has been dubbed the ‘Slovenian Erling Haaland’. The Gunners have been urged to bolster their forward line but signing a player with a bright future ahead of him rather than a household name could prove to be a very shrewd decision.

Sesko is said to be considered by Arsenal following his impressive start to the season, scoring three times in seven Bundesliga appearances. He has also hit the back of the net four times during Slovenia’s Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, prompting plenty of top clubs to take notice.

One of those teams is Arsenal, who have scouted Sesko this season and continue to track his progress. This comes at a time when Edu and Mikel Arteta have been called on to sign a top-class striker to help them usurp Manchester City for the Premier League title this season.

Ivan Toney has already been mentioned, but signing the Brentford star could cause a logjam up front. With the England striker set to demand a fee in the region of £60million, he would provide immediate competition for the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Eddie Nketiah and Kai Havertz.

The apple cart could be upset with so many senior strikers competing for minutes. Jesus and Nketiah especially have performed well up front this season and if their minutes are significantly reduced then there is the possibility of having too many options for one spot.

However, Sesko would not demand a large amount of minutes immediately and has only started two out of his seven league games in Germany this season. He could learn from the current crop and not take as much game time away from them as opposed to Toney.

Sesko would also likely cost £40m, a considerable drop from the fees quoted for other targets, leaving the possibility of an additional transfer being made with the saving on a striker should Leipzig be open to selling their future superstar.

Arteta did dismiss the idea of signing another forward in January in the build-up to their victory over City last month, potentially confirming that someone in the ilk of Toney would not be necessary. Sesko then would become a more appealing option as he can be the future of the club.

“We believe in the players that we have first of all,” Arteta said. “Because we have the resources that we have secondly, and at the moment we feel we are covering that position.”
