Arsene Wenger could have helped Man Utd beat Arsenal but trials not implemented
Erik ten Hag not happy with decisions in the game with Arsenal
Arsenal icon Arsene Wenger has put forward proposals that would have seen Alejandro Garnacho’s late goal against the Gunners stand on Sunday. Manchester United forward Garnacho raced through on goal to slot home what would have likely been the winner in an enthralling Premier League clash – only to be denied by millimetres.
A lengthy VAR check found that Garnacho had strayed just offside. To compound United’s misery, Arsenal struck twice deep into stoppage time to seal a 3-1 victory.
But goals similar to Garnacho’s might stand in future Premier League seasons due to a law proposed by former Arsenal boss Wenger, who is now FIFA’s chief of global football development. Currently, an attacker is offside when any part of their body is ahead of the second-to-last defender – including the goalkeeper – when the ball is released to them.
Wenger’s change, though, will hand the advantage back to the attacker. The Frenchman wants the law to be adapted so that if any part of the attacker is in line with the second-to-last defender, they will be deemed onside – regardless of any body part being ahead.

Garnacho’s chest and shoulder were ahead of Arsenal defender Gabriel, meaning the goal was ruled out for offside. FIFA president Gianni Infantino has explained Wenger’s new law, with the proposal currently at a review stage and no trial has been implemented.
“It is in the study phase because we want soccer to be more offensive every day. In 135 years of history, [the offside rule] has only been changed twice,” Infantino has previously said.
“Arsene Wenger has presented us with one possibility, which is that there is no offside if the striker is in an offside position, but a part of the body with which you can score a goal is in line with the defence. In this way we would have much more offensive football.”
United boss Erik ten Hag was furious at the decision to disallow Garnacho’s goal. He also felt debutant Rasmus Hojlund should have had a penalty, and believed there was a ‘clear’ foul in the build-up to Declan Rice’s goal that made the score 2-1 to the Gunners.

“The performance was alright from us. I thought we played a very good game but everything went against us – then you don’t win the game,” the Dutchman told Sky Sports.
“We needed a little bit more luck to win the game. It was not offside [for Alejandro Garnacho goal]. It was the wrong angle.
“It was then a penalty on [Rasmus] Hojlund and then we concede a goal that’s a foul on Jonny Evans. It’s so clear and obvious.”
