When David Wagner returned to English football to take over a faltering Norwich City in January, he was supposed to be the man to help them bounce back to the Premier League.

But on the hour, he seemed to be on the brink of losing his job with the German on course for his 20th defeat in 43 games at the hands of a resurgent Bristol City under Liam Manning.

However, a stunning second half fightback from his side saved his blushes with Adam Idah outmuscling Zak Vyner to tuck home a dramatic winner in the 95th minute.

Wagner charged down the touchline to celebrate with his players and was somewhere at the bottom of a team bundle amid ecstatic scenes.

The Norwich supporters serenaded their team at full time but Wagner still has some work to do with a large majority still in favour of his dismissal.

Earlier, George Tanner had earlier inadvertently tucked Dimitris Giannoulis’ cross past Max O’Leary into his own net to cancel out Jason Knight’s opener for the hosts.

Wagner – who was on the receiving end of angry chants in Tuesday’s defeat to Watford – had further attracted Norwich fans’ ire before kick off when he selected Kenny McLean out of position at centre back, but it looked like a shrewd move.

They seemed anything but a team short of confidence by forcing a succession of early corners, with Jack Stacey and Ashely Barnes going close. Brazilian Gabriel Sara was running the show from midfield but when Onel Hernandez hit the post after fine work from Jonathan Rowe, the hosts burst into life.

Taylor Gardner-Hickman – the Robins’ Player of the Month for November – forced Angus Gunn into one of three superb first half saves, but it was Knight who broke the deadlock.

Gunn parried a sharp George Tanner cross into the danger zone after a fine move and Knight was there to fire home for his first league goal for the club.

Tommy Conway and Knight then had golden chances to double the lead but Gunn pulled off two sprawling stops.

The Norwich supporters – who travelled in numbers – ironically began to chant ‘it’s all our fault’, perhaps in response to joint owner Delia Smith’s comments this week that 20 per cent of the fanbase are ‘whingers’.

Their side did heed Smith’s call-to-action as they came out fighting in the second half, before a lunging Tanner suffered the ignominy of putting one past his own keeper.

The more mobile Adam Idah replaced Ashley Barnes for Norwich to stretch the line but both sides seemed to be lacking that extra bit of quality.

It was the hosts who were putting the pressure on, but when Idah broke through and held off Vyner, he ensured Norwich would snatch the points with the last kick of the game.
