‘Fergie put price on my head after we fell out – I didn’t want to leave Man Utd’

Former Manchester United star Lee Sharpe has revealed he never wanted to leave the Red Devils, but his hand was forced after he fell out with Sir Alex Ferguson.

Sharpe spent eight years at Old Trafford before he left in 1998 to join bitter rivals Leeds United. And Sharpe has now revealed his move was down to his relationship with Sir Alex.

The ex-winger told AGamble.com: "I didn’t want to leave the club, the team and my teammates but I just wasn’t getting on with Fergie. I went in and mentioned that I would be interested in a transfer, well I got my solicitor rather than me personally to ring the club and say that I was looking for a move.

"I think Brian Kidd told the manager that I shouldn’t be allowed to leave as he wanted to keep me, but the manager was sort of umming and ahing but then put a price tag on my head and said 'yeah you can go'."

Sharpe added that Fergie decided the price tag, and he thougth it was a tad too high: "My solicitor rang me and I had a had a chat with Fergie. He said 'I'm gonna put a price on your head. You think you should be playing every week so I’ll put a price on your head that I think is fair'.

"I didn’t know the price as he was just letting other managers know, but when I found out the price I just thought it was a bit high considering I’d not played regularly for a number of years, and it limited the number of clubs that I could go to which was a bit of a shame.

"But it’s all part and parcel of the football world."

Sharpe failed to hit the ground running at Leeds and was shipped out to the Serie A on loan to find some form. Sharpe retired in 2004 after a short spell in Iceland before returning to non-league football in Yorkshire.

After retiring Sharpe moved to Spain, where he opened a sports bar on the Costa Blanca.
