Four players might regret leaving Liverpool as Henderson faces backlash

Football Digest: Liverpool start the season strong

Liverpool have overseen a drastic overhaul of Jurgen Klopp’s squad this summer. Eleven stars have departed, either on permanent deals or on loan, but many of those players might regret leaving Anfield after the Reds’ positive start to the season.

Express Sport looks at four individuals who might have regrets.

Fabio Carvalho

Former Fulham playmaker Fabio Carvalho has suffered a tough start to his loan spell at RB Leipzig. Sent to Germany to earn regular game time, the Portugal youth international has struggled to win a place in the team.

Carvalho played just six minutes in Leipzig’s opening-day 3-2 Bundesliga defeat against Bayer Leverkusen. He has been unused in their subsequent two league fixtures since, making just one further appearance in the Super Cup.

The 21-year-old may have got more game time had he remained at Anfield. He now faces a huge battle trying to get into Leipzig’s starting 11.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Long-serving midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was one of the several stars released at the end of last season. The experienced former Arsenal man had struggled with injuries in his final few years at Liverpool.

Upon leaving Merseyside, Oxlade-Chamberlain might have assumed he would be inundated with offers from mid-table Premier League clubs, desperate to take a chance on a talented player. But none of those proposals arrived.

A move to Besiktas ensued but with the Turkish club only playing in the Europa Conference League, you suspect the England man might have preferred a Premier League stay.

Jordan Henderson

Fans can debate the motives behind Jordan Henderson’s move to Saudi Arabia – but was it all really worth it? The former club captain would have played in Liverpool’s opening few games, contrary to his claim that Klopp did not do enough to convince him to stay.

The ethical merits and accusations of hypocrisy will continue to be discussed. But in terms of sporting achievements, Henderson has done himself no favours if he wants a guaranteed spot in the England team for Euro 2024.

Gareth Southgate questioned the speed and quality of the Saudi Pro League last week. With excellent talent breaking through in midfield, there is no certainty that Henderson will play for the Three Lions in Germany next summer.

Calvin Ramsay

Calvin Ramsay endured an underwhelming first year at Anfield. Expected to provide back-up to Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, the Scot instead suffered an untimely injury and missed most of the campaign.

Now back fit, Ramsay has been sent on loan to Preston to continue his development. But the 20-year-old has already had a setback with a knee injury that will reportedly require surgery.
