  • Nicolas Jackson’s hat-trick saw him win Player of the Match and claim match ball

Chelsea players took their celebrations from the pitch into the dressing room in the wake of their thrilling 4-1 win against Tottenham in north London on Monday evening.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side made the most of their two-man advantage in the challenging match-up at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, going ahead in the second-half thanks to a Nicolas Jackson hat-trick after Cole Palmer opened their account from the spot.

The feisty London derby moved at breakneck pace and was littered with VAR complications and curiosities that saw five goals ruled out – for both sides – and Spurs’ Destiny Udogie and Cristian Romero being given their marching orders by referee Michael Oliver.

The home side impressed as they clung onto their 1-1 draw for much of the lopsided tie, but were eventually outfoxed as they held their high defensive line to end their unbeaten run since the start of the Premier League season.

For Chelsea, the combination of an long-desired win against a top-table opponent and a quick bounceback defeat by Brentford at home in their last Premier League outing meant there was much to celebrate.

The side looked jubilant as they posed for a group photograph in the away dressing room after time, in a picture gleefully shared to the club’s Instagram account with the caption ‘Morning, Blues!’

Stars including Moises Caicedo and Raheem Sterling – both of whom had attempts ruled out upon review – beamed cheek-by-jowl alongside their team-mates, as did Reece James, Chelsea’s captain.

James has suffered a checkered start to the 2023-24 campaign, with his start against Blackburn Rovers in midweek Carabao Cup action only his second of the season after missing large swathes of gametime due to injury.

But the right-back was on flying form against old foes Spurs until his late second-half replacement by Malo Gusto as Pochettino continues to manage the skipper’s minutes.

Jackson shared his own behind-the-scenes snap as he shared a picture of his match ball and Player of the Match award in the wake of a performance that saw him double his Premier League season’s goal tally in one night.

The Senegal international at times looked wide of the mark for the Blues but he kept up the pressure and was eventually rewarded with a league landmark haul that should boost his confidence ahead of a tough meeting with Manchester City on Sunday.

The striker also starred in goalkeeper Robert Sanchez’s Instagram story as celebrations continued on the coach home

Jackson later featured on his goalkeeper Robert Sanchez’s Instagram story as the pair posed with three fingers up to celebrate the 22-year-old’s hat-trick as the Chelsea coach made its way back to west London.

‘Mucho gol hermano (fire emojis)’ – or ‘many goals, brother!’ – the caption read, as Sanchez lauded his striker.

Unlike their next opponents, Chelsea will have some time this week to revel in their win as they begin preparations ahead of travelling to the Treble-winners.

Man City have a busier schedule, as they continue the defence of the Champions League trophy against Young Boys at the Etihad on Tuesday evening.
