Celtic fans have torn into Joey Barton after he claimed their 5-1 win over Rangers in 2016 was actually "quite close".

Barton was in the middle of the park for the Gers when they were

at Celtic Park. A hattrick from Mousa Dembele coupled with strikes from Scott Sinclair and Stuart Armstrong sealed an unforgettable afternoon for Brendan Rodgers' side.

Nevertheless, Barton, 41, insisted the scoreline did not tell the full story, as, despite being 3-1 down at the time, he thinks Rangers were still in the game until former Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos was sent off.

In a controversial appearance on the James English podcast, Barton said: “It turns out we played Celtic, lost 5-1, Celtic, if you remember, played on the Tuesday or the Wednesday in the Camp Nou against Barcelona. I knew Celtic were s*** based on our fraction with them, even though they beat us, the game was quite close.

“The sending off massively changed it and we were massively under-prepared and there wasn’t much in the game. They were better than us, they were ahead of us, but there wasn’t loads in it, there wasn’t certainly as much as people felt.

“They were playing Barcelona and I’ve gone to all my mates, ‘listen, this Celtic team is bang average, they’re not as good as what they are.’ Once I’ve had a scrap with you all and played against you, I am very good at nullifying you the next-time around, because I go, ‘right, that’s what he’s good at, don’t do that.’ I’m quite scheming in that way."

Needless to say, rival fans found his comments rather amusing. One fan wrote: "Celtic won an invincible treble that year. Crazy talk from Barton. Drew with a top team in Man City twice also among other great games and results. Really don’t know why he’s spoke utter nonsense here. I respect professionals but tell the truth don’t speak s***."

Another added: "Imagine starting a sentence with ‘So Celtic beat us 5-1’ and then continuing that sentence by calling them s***." A third also pointed out: “His rangers team finished 39 points behind that season."

One other fan focussed on his comments about Barcelona beating Celtics by saying: "Wow, Nostradamus here predicting Celtic were going to get hammered by one of the best Barca teams ever."
