It’s Liverpool 2.0! Manager Jurgen Klopp says he has ‘new energy’ as rebuilt Reds go for eight wins on the bounce at Spurs

Jurgen Klopp has challenged his Liverpool 2.0 to create their own destiny as he explained how rebuilding the team has left him re-energised.

Liverpool’s flying start to the campaign – they have won their last seven fixtures in all competitions – will be put to the test over the next week, with trips to Tottenham and Brighton sandwiching a tricky Europa League fixture at home to Belgian side Union St Gilloise.

Klopp will not allow himself to get caught up in the excitement that is growing within the red half of the city and warned repeatedly yesterday that for all the promising signs, the team is still “not stable” and he is anxious about the way they are beginning matches.

But there is no question Klopp’s mood has changed from how it was 12 months ago, when that summer’s recruitment had failed to reap dividends, key players struggled and results fell off a cliff. The task of trying to create a new team over the summer, then, was a task he gleefully accepted.

‘It was the job we had to do,’ said Klopp, who will have Trent Alexander-Arnold back in his squad for the first time in month at Tottenham. ‘I had seven years at (Borussia) Dortmund – when I left there, it was a moment where change was needed.

‘We would have had to change players in different roles – or the manager. Dortmund, in the end, did both. So I left and they changed a lot anyway. So (this summer) was a moment for that. It is not the first time I was allowed to do something like that. I love it. It gives me completely new energy.

‘It’s great – this team has a completely new set up. I loved everything about the seven years before but obviously we all need energy sources and looking at these faces every day to see how much they enjoy the new challenge gives me energy as well. I know it is words, but it feels like that.

‘We don’t want to compare or think: “how did they (his first great team) do that?” We try to give this team a chance to create their own destiny. That is what we decided. That is what we live now and that is how it works. 

I don’t know where it will lead but it is good fun anyway.’ It has helped that new signings Dominik Sbozoszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, who arrived for a combined £95million, have made an instant impact and the sense of calm around the club has been enhanced by owners Fenway Sports Group securing a £100m+ investment deal with Dynasty Equity.

FSG’s agreement with the New York-based firm has bolstered the club’s financial position but it doesn’t mean Klopp will be running out in January and buying another four new faces: significantly, he doesn’t feel the squad needs more surgery anyway.

‘I can understand money in football is all about spending,’ said Klopp. ‘I get that. I want to spend but we shouldn’t forget we are building a new stand that will improve the best atmosphere in the world. We built the Main Stand, a new training ground, other things that keep the club in a healthy state.

‘If someone comes in and helps us do that, great. We are in a year where we don’t play Champions League, which is a massive financial blow. But we improved the team in the summer anyway – which is difficult. It is good news and money which will we well used.’
