Jurgen Klopp couldn’t hide his bemusement after Manchester United were sent crashing out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle.
While the German’s Liverpool side won 2-1 at Bournemouth to advance to the quarter-finals, the Red Devils were being subjected to another embarrassing loss thanks to goals from Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall and Joe Willock. That followed a chastening derby defeat at the hands of Manchester City by the same scoreline on Sunday.
The result heaped further pressure on Erik ten Hag, who is in danger of being sacked just months after leading the club to Carabao Cup glory and a return to the Champions League. The Dutchman vowed to fight on, saying: “We have a lot of setbacks this season so far, but also you have to deal with it and that is never an excuse.”

The result at Old Trafford clearly took Klopp aback. As he prepared to face the media post-match at Bournemouth, he was alerted to the result at Old Trafford before appearing to say “ooooo, okay" and then clenching his teeth together.
The reaction was lapped up by Liverpool fans, who are loving their arch-rivals’ continuing woes. Meanwhile, Klopp was pleased with how his much-changed side coped with the conditions at the Vitality Stadium, which was battered by Storm Ciaran.

“It’s a top, top, top cup game,” said Reds boss Klopp, who made eight changes from Sunday’s 3-0 Premier League win over Nottingham Forest. “It’s all about winning, it’s all about getting through.
“The good thing today is I don’t have to speak about the circumstances because everybody saw it and felt it. It was really difficult, for both teams obviously.”
Substitute Darwin Nunez settled the fourth-round tie staged in driving rain and swirling winds with a stunning 70th-minute winner. Cody Gakpo had given the Reds a half-time lead before the Cherries threatened a surprise thanks to Justin Kluivert’s first goal in English football.
The Reds will host West Ham in the quarter-finals the week before Christmas. Meanwhile, Newcastle's reward for thumping United is a trip to Chelsea.
