Kylian Mbappe left TNT commentators baffled with captain’s armband move

PSG forward Kylian Mbappe baffled commentators with his captain's armband antics during his side's clash against Newcastle United.

The World Cup winner stepped up and lashed home a late equaliser from the penalty spot to secure a controversial 1-1 draw against the Premier League side. It was a far from vintage performance from the 24-year-old, but his late intervention ensured PSG are in the driving seat when it comes to qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

But before fans were left scratching their heads about the nature of the penalty awarded to the Ligue 1 giants, Mbappe had baffled fans as the team's captain. Despite acting as skipper for Luis Enrique's side, he seemingly disposed of his armband in the later stages of the match.

With PSG's current captain Marquinhos currently injured, Mbappe was acting as skipper at the Parc des Princes. Considering the armband was a luminous shade of yellow, it was rather difficult to not see it on his arm throughout the contest.

However, in the closing stages of the game it was not over his arm, nor was it being worn by any of his other PSG colleagues. He had either taken it off or lost it during the game.

TNT Sport commentator Darren Fletcher said: “Not sure what Mbappe’s done with the captain’s armband but he hasn’t got it on anymore. Whether it’s superstition or not he’s got rid of it and nobody else has got one out there.

“Of course it’s Marquinhos who’s the captain here. Mbappe was wearing the armband because he’s not available.” Mbappe either found it or he was told to put it back on in time for his late penalty as he was wearing it when he scored the equaliser.

He now has a great chance of wearing the armband again in the knockout stages of the contest. With Newcastle leading through Alexander Isak's first half goal, Eddie Howe's side had jumped into second position in Group F.

However, a draw saw the French giants shove them back down to third. Newcastle now need to overcome AC Milan at St James' Park in their final group match and hope Dortmund either beat or draw with PSG at Signal Iduna Park to go through.
