Liverpool ace Virgil van Dijk shows true colours with comments on Mac Allister

Virgil van Dijk underlined his leadership credentials by defending Alexis Mac Allister following his mistake for Liverpool against Brighton on Sunday afternoon. The Reds were ultimately forced to settle for a draw at the Amex Stadium, with Lewis Dunk’s late equaliser for the hosts ensuring the spoils were shared at full-time.

The fixture saw Mac Allister return to Brighton for the first time since leaving the Seagulls to join Liverpool over the summer, although it was a game to forget for the 24-year-old. He was at fault for Brighton’s opening goal as he gave the ball away in the middle of the park before Simon Adingra slotted home to finish a rapid counter-attacking move.

Van Dijk was quizzed on the incident after the full-time whistle and spoke like a true captain as he deflected the blame from his team-mate. The Dutchman insisted that he was also at fault for not stopping Brighton from scoring, with the Seagulls still having to unlock Liverpool’s defence before working the ball into a shooting position.

“Obviously it is not only him, it is me as well,” Van Dijk told Sky Sports. “It is a risky ball and we try to play out from the back. These things happen and you get punished. The way we bounced back was a great reaction.”

The Reds went on to come from behind thanks to Mohamed Salah’s first-half brace, which saw the visitors head into the break in front. They were unable to hold onto their slender lead, though, with Dunk heading home late on to end Liverpool’s nine-game winning streak in all competitions.

Mac Allister was also asked for his thoughts on his early mistake against his former club, with the Argentine midfielder telling BBC Sport: “We make mistakes, we are football players and this kind of thing happens. The most important thing is how you react and I think the team reacted well.

“We came back and scored two goals but, as I say, we conceded the set-piece and it is just a point. [In] the second half we had so many good moments, they couldn’t get the ball and that was good for us. They are a strong team, they play football and counter-attack as well.

“I don’t know if it was fair [the result]. Today I feel like we dropped two points, but we will see in the future. They are a top team and some top clubs have dropped points here.”
