Liverpool’s best-ever Premier League XI according to AI – with legends snubbed
AI has named Liverpool's greatest-ever Premier League XI – and controversially left a number of bona fide club icons out of the line-up.
Some of the greatest figures in European football history have passed through Anfield in the last 30 years, and despite the fact the Reds have only won the Premier League once, they've never finished below eighth, meaning there's a boatload of talented stars to pick from.
We put ChatGPT on the case, and let's just say we were taken aback by one of or two of the programme's choices. Of those who were snubbed, three of them sealed a top-three finish in the Ballon d'Or while at Liverpool, while another has scored roughly 200 goals for the club. Here's the XI in full:

Goalkeeper
No surprises here, Alisson Becker gets the nod in goal. If we're honest, the Brazilian is the only genuinely world class keeper Liverpool have had in the Premier League era. Some fans might sentimentally push for Pepe Reina, but the Spaniard couldn't hold a candle to Alisson's consistency, versatility and overall quality.
His arrival from Roma in 2018 proved something of a catalyst for Liverpool's climb to the summit of both English and European football, and he's been generally considered the best in the country ever since.

Defence
Trent Alexander-Arnold is in at right-back, which is little surprise given both the distinct lack of elite alternatives and the 25-year-old's other-worldly creative output. Similarly, Andy Robertson takes the left-back slot, nipping in, as he so often does on that left-flank, comfortably ahead of the only other real contender, John Arne Riise.
The controversy starts at centre back. ChatGPT went for Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia, and while, on the face of it, those two were a formidable pair, the absence of Virgil van Dijk is a proper head-scratcher. Not only is the Dutchman widely regarded as one of the Prem's best-ever defenders but he was a couple of votes away from being crowned the best player in the world in 2019. Though that wasn't enough to twist ChatGPT's arm, apparently.
Midfield
Steven Gerrard was the first name on Liverpool's team sheet for the vast majority of his 17-year stint at the club, and the same goes here. The former Reds skipper is one of best midfielders England have ever produced and even failure to win the Premier League couldn't bump him from this team.
Two men who partnered him in the centre have also made the cut. The first is Xabi Alonso, who blossomed into a Rolls-Royce midfielder at Anfield before sealing a deserved move to Real Madrid, and the second is Jordan Henderson, who captained Liverpool throughout their most successful period in the Premier League era. The likes of Fabinho and Georginio Wijnaldum might feel a little aggrieved to have missed out, but few Reds midfielders in history can compete with the on-field legacies left by the trio ChatGPT went for.
Attack
Liverpool have had more than their fair share of scintillating attackers in last three decades, so major casualties were to be expected here. Saying that, there aren't many who would have predicted that Mo Salah would be left out. Sneaking in ahead of the Egyptian, who is, at the time at the writing, two goals shy of a double ton for Liverpool, is Luis Suarez, who tore defences (and Branislav Ivanovic's forearm) apart in a genuinely spellbinding three-and-a-half year stint at Anfield.
Fernando Torres, who partially-razed his Liverpool legacy by moving to Chelsea, also gets the nod after blasting 81 goals for the club, as does Robbie Fowler, who was affectionately labelled 'God' by Reds fans thanks his incessant goal poaching in the 90s. Like Salah, Michael Owen and Sadio Mane might feel a little peeved at being snubbed, but the attack ChatGPT went for isn't exactly short on goals or quality without them.
