Man Utd board’s stance on sacking Erik ten Hag after dreadful Newcastle defeat

Football Digest: Man Utd urged to give Ten Hag time he needs

Manchester United’s board are reportedly desperate to stick with Erik ten Hag despite a dismal start to the season. The Red Devils crashed out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday after a 3-0 defeat at home to a rotated Newcastle side, with the pressure continuing to build on their Dutch boss.

United have lost five of their 10 Premier League games this season so far and currently sit in eighth place, while are also third in their Champions League group after defeats to Bayern Munich and Galatasaray. Ten Hag has so far failed to bring his Ajax-style attractive brand of football to Old Trafford and continued poor performances and results have led to more questions posed over his future.

Club icon Gary Neville has even hinted that Ten Hag is headed towards being sacked in his rant on social media, but ESPN have claimed that club chiefs are standing by the Dutchman for now. They are said to be desperate to stick with Ten Hag, but will know that the current situation cannot continue much longer.

United have endured their worst league start through 10 games since 1986 and taunts of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” have become commonplace, with the travelling Newcastle supporters the latest group of fans to taunt Ten Hag.

The boss will be firmly aware that he is fighting for his future, after taking responsibility for the defeat to Eddie Howe’s side and apologising to the fans. “It was not good enough,” he admitted.

“We have to take responsibility for it. I have to take responsibility for it. We didn’t give the performance so I am sorry to the fans. It is below our standards and we have to put it right. We have to recover from it, and do it quickly.

“Saturday is the next game and we have to raise our standards. This is not good enough. Players will stand up and they are sticking together. You have seen that they have tried and we know this is not good enough. I am responsible for this and we will do this together.”

It would reportedly cost United more than £15million to sack Ten Hag, however, which may play into the hands of the Dutchman as talks will be taking place over his future.

Ten Hag’s decisions have been jeered by the home crowd at Old Trafford in recent weeks, but he clearly retains some support as he was applauded when exiting the pitch on Wednesday. But Ten Hag and the board know that this disappointing run cannot go on for too long or he could suffer the same fate as his predecessors and lose his job.
