Erik ten Hag has responded to claims made by Virgil van Dijk that his Manchester United side did not attempt to secure all three points against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon. The Red Devils defended well to secure a 0-0 draw at Anfield, with defender Diogo Dalot being sent off late on following two yellow cards for dissent.
Despite failing to create any clear-cut openings against United, Van Dijk felt that Liverpool dominated proceedings in Merseyside and was disappointed by the stalemate. Speaking after the match, he said: “They’re (United) not in the best phase right now so coming here, you’re wary of the threat we have.
“But we should’ve won it today and that’s the disappointing thing. We can’t dwell on it though, we have big games coming up. If you see how we played the game, we had most of the ball, created the most opportunities and there was only one team that was trying to win the game and unfortunately that didn’t happen.”
The comments questioning United’s desires raised eyebrows among many, with Red Devils legend Roy Keane particularly unhappy by the remarks. However, Ten Hag only provided a blunt reply to Sky Sports when asked for his thoughts on the post-match press conference.

The ex-Ajax boss replied: “It’s his opinion.” Ten Hag then went on to speak of the chances that his side missed, continuing: “We should have taken more of the ball regains three or four passes in where we are capable of and then we could have even hurt the opponent even more.
“But all over in the end, you have to conclude, we had the best chances from open play for Rasmus Hojlund and (Alejandro) Garnacho.”

Former United captain Keane was not willing to allow Van Dijk’s comments pass without a response though, labelling the Netherlands international as ‘arrogant’. He told Sky Sports: ““It is a missed opportunity for them, yes, and we heard Van Dijk speaking there – a bit of arrogance from Van Dijk dissing United, he needs to remind himself he’s playing for a club that’s won one title in 30 odd years.
“He said one team wanted to win like Man United aren’t in a difficult place! Liverpool were in a difficult place for many years before this, maybe that arrogance backfired on him today. That’s arrogance, he said Man United were buzzing. United had one or two chances that they could’ve taken but players like him need a reminder that they’re playing for clubs like Liverpool that aren’t this or that. I wouldn’t be disrespecting clubs like he is.”
