Bruno Fernandes made Robbie Savage eat his words on Wednesday, when Manchester United took on Galatasaray in a fiery Champions League goal-fest. The Red Devils captain’s lung-busting run prompted the TNT Sports pundit to sing his praises, but both were left embarrassed when the Turkish giants netted moments later.
On a rain-soaked pitch, in front of a revved-up crowd, United built on Sunday’s 3-0 win over Everton by going two goals to the good against Galatasaray. As he did at Goodison Park, Alejandro Garnacho opened the scoring, albeit in less spectacular fashion than he managed on Merseyside.
Fernandes then unleashed a long-range thunderbolt to double United’s lead, and the Portuguese used his surge of adrenaline to maintain a ferocious work rate.
It got the better of him inside the first half an hour, however, when he raced back towards his own box to commit a foul in a dangerous area.

Savage, who was on TNT Sports co-commentary duties for the match, was quick to shower Fernandes with praise for his effort and commitment to track back and put a foot in. But the former Premier League midfielder was humbled when Hakim Ziyech stepped up and slotted the resulting free-kick past Andre Onana.
Despite three first-half goals, the action was only just getting started at Rams Park and Scott McTominay restored United’s two-goal cushion shortly after the break.

Galatasaray used the rampant support of the home crowd to their advantage and began throwing the kitchen sink at the visitors. Ziyech notched his second free-kick goal of the game, which was swiftly followed by a tremendous strike from substitute Kerem Akturkoglu to level up the scores.
United goalkeeper Andre Onana was, to varying degrees, arguably at fault for all three Galatasaray goals. And pundit Owen Hargreaves took aim at the stopper, instead of Fernandes, when discussing the free-kick he conceded in the first period.
“It’s not really a mistake,” he told TNT Sports. “Bruno Fernandes is the captain and has to make that run back and he’s on the wrong side and he fouls, because he has to. If you’re 2-0 up, you have to be in the right position and obviously then the resulting free-kick, Ziyech is over the ball and Onana can’t see because of the two players in front.
“He takes a step to the left which he probably shouldn’t, he just needs to stay there. It’s not really a great free-kick, if Onana just stays in the middle he probably saves that. Once he takes that step to the left, he can’t make it back.”
