Man Utd stars Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford started Benni McCarthy trend

Ten Hag backs Onana despite more struggles in Man Utd defeat

Manchester United stars Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford set the standards in a Benni McCarthy drill by staying behind after training to practice their finishing. Red Devils coach McCarthy had an incredible impact on Rashford’s form during his first year at Old Trafford.

McCarthy explained that he sometimes puts on finishing drills for the attacking players once the main session has finished. The South African found that club captain Fernandes was keen to join in and the playmaker ultimately set the standard.

He then found that Rashford was also desperate to join in, which prompted an excellent run of form for the England star. Once team-mates saw Fernandes and Rashford getting involved, McCarthy says everyone wanted to be part of the session.

The former striker told 947 Joburg: “They’re not the most complicated drills, but simple ones strikers face in the game 7/10 times. The more consistent you become, the easier it becomes in the game. The more I started doing that…

“Bruno was the one who wanted to stay behind every day, and after a while it started catching on. Half the team was there, even the midfielders and defenders because it was fun and exciting.

“We started making them do competitions so we had a winner every day. That’s how I started getting everyone engaged. Bruno was there every single day, Rashy followed and so on.

“We just created that culture where the finishing drills were about competitiveness, repetition and making the goalkeeper work.”

Rashford enjoyed some incredible form while working under McCarthy last season. The 25-year-old scored 32 goals in all competitions and shouldered the scoring burden at Old Trafford, with Fernandes’s 13 in all competitions the second-highest among the squad.

This term has not gone according to plan for the forward, though. He has struck just one goal in nine appearances. A lack of confidence was summed up by him choosing to pass to Fernandes rather than shoot when he bore down on goal against Galatasaray on Tuesday.

According to the Mirror, United staff are ‘concerned’ by Rashford’s form and he could face being dropped by Erik ten Hag, despite signing a reported £375,000 per-week deal in the summer. Alejandro Garnacho is in line for more minutes if Rashford drops to the bench.
