Michael Owen opens up on bitter Shearer feud as pair haven’t spoke in 3 years
Newcastle prepare for Borussia Dortmund Champions League tie
Michael Owen has opened up on his spat with Alan Shearer as he revealed that they have not spoken since arguing on social media over three years ago. Shearer coached Owen during his time in charge of Newcastle in 2009/10 but their relationship became strained and the former England strikers have drifted further away from each other as the years have gone by.
The pair now work in the media but curiously do not feature on the same TV channels, with Shearer often appearing on the BBC while Owen can be found on TNT Sports. Shearer was initially described as “a good mate” by Owen in his autobiography, but his fitness issues while at Newcastle continued to plague their relationship.
In response to Owen’s tell-all book nearly a decade on, Shearer responded by posting a video on X (formerly known as Twitter) with a video in which Owen said: “I hated it, I couldn’t wait to retire.” As Shearer captioned the post: “Yes Michael, we thought that also, whilst on £120k a week…”
Owen then fired back at his former boss, replying: “Not sure you are as loyal to Newcastle as you make out mate. I distinctly remember you being inches away from signing for Liverpool after Sir Bobby Robson put you on the bench. You tried everything to get out.”

Now Owen has confirmed that the pair have not spoken since this incident, though should they cross paths he would offer to shake Shearer’s hand. He told DAZN: “I haven’t spoken to Alan Shearer since he criticised my book, no. Alan works at the BBC and I work on other channels, so we rarely cross paths. I would say hello and shake his hand, things like that, but no we haven’t spoken since then.”
Owen did surprisingly name his foe in his all-time Premier League XI alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Thierry Henry up front as he described Shearer as “an absolute monster of a centre forward”. But he made his thoughts perfectly clear on the league’s top-scorer of all-time as he blamed the Newcastle legend for the animosity surrounding his spell in the north-east after joining from Real Madrid.

“There has been a lot of lies, bulls*** and general misinformation surrounding the end of my time at Newcastle,” Owen wrote in his book.
“Sadly, this feud has continued to the present day. The more I think about it, the more I understand why Alan behaves the way he does and continues to spread negativity about me whenever he can.
“He was brought in at St. James’ Park as the saviour, the local boy. It could have been a great story. But he failed. Newcastle United were relegated. Perhaps rather than examine his own shortcomings, it felt easier to blame Michael Owen.”
