Mykhailo Mudryk shared a message of support for Kieran Trippier after his errors in Chelsea’s Carabao Cup victory over Newcastle.

The two sides faced off in the last eight of the competition at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, with the Blues desperate for silverware after a mixed start to Mauricio Pochettino’s time at the club, while the Magpies were keen to go one better after losing to Man United in the final last season.

Callum Wilson put Newcastle ahead in the first half after a mistake from Benoit Badiashile and it looked as if that would be enough for the victory.

However, Mudryk seized upon an error from Trippier in injury time to level the game when the right back failed to deal with Malo Gusto’s cross and headed the ball back into a dangerous area.

In the subsequent penalty shootout, Mudryk then scored his spot kick, with Trippier missing the target altogether before Djordje Petrovic saved Matt Ritchie’s decisive effort from 12 yards to ensure Chelsea reached the semi-finals.

And, following the game, the Ukrainian winger took to social media to throw his support behind the Newcastle defender.

Sharing a photo of the moment he slotted home after Trippier’s error, he said: ‘Kieran, just wanna say to you, stay strong, sometimes the s*** happens, but I think you are (a) strong footballer no matter what. @ktrippier2.’

Mudryk – who was only introduced with 12 minutes to go on Tuesday – scored just his third Chelsea goal since his £88m move from Shakhtar Donetsk in January after making the most of Trippier’s misfortune.

The 22-year-old has put in improved performances of late and Pochettino will hope Tuesday night is Mudryk’s breakthrough moment in a Chelsea shirt.

Trippier had replaced Emil Krafth at half-time after the Swedish defender appeared to suffer another injury to add to Eddie Howe’s lengthy list of absentees.

However, his mistake continued his poor run of form after also making two errors in the 3-0 defeat to Everton earlier this month, while he struggled to deal with Son Heung-Min when Newcastle were beaten 4-1 by Tottenham a few days later.

Middlesbrough and Fulham joined Chelsea in securing a place in the Carabao Cup last four on Tuesday night, with the final spot to be decided between West Ham on Liverpool on Wednesday.
