Nottingham Forest make classy gesture to fan, 16, after Last Post performance

Remembrance Sunday: Last Post played at The Cenotaph

Nottingham Forest have made a heartwarming gesture to the young supporter who struggled to get through his Last Post performance last Sunday at the City Ground. The poignant tune is played annually in November to mark Remembrance Day and ahead of Sunday’s memorial service, football teams from around the country will observe a two minute silence.

The song, which represents the bugle used by the British Army as an effective form of communication to signal the camp was secure for the night, is usually played by a member of the armed forces.

But Forest gave 16-year-old Caiden Storry the chance to perform – only for nerves to get the better of him halfway through. The youngster showed his bravery as he tried to continue but his attempts proved to be fruitless.

The 25,000-strong crowd had already gone silent to respect the Last Post performance but gave the teenager a rousing reception when they quickly recognised what had happened.

Not only did he receive a standing ovation from his fellow Forest fans, Steve Cooper came over to give him a hug and comforted him.

He still looked distraught as he was consoled on the touchline before heading down the tunnel. In an attempt to cheer him up, his favourite club decided to reach out again and give him a day he would never forget for all of the right reasons.

Ahead of Remembrance Day on Sunday, the Premier League side saw it fitting to go a step further and invite Caiden to visit their training ground at their base in Wilford Lane. There, he met Cooper again as well as the players and coaching staff, who were all keen to meet the musician.

“He’s one of us, he’s one of the family,” Cooper said. “I spoke to Caiden before he spent the day with us yesterday. It was great to see him. The players and the staff wanted to see him.

“He’s a lovely young man. He loves Nottingham Forest and has been a season ticket-holder since he was five. He’s really well spoken and really clear about where he wants his journey to be in life. It was a pleasure to meet him.”

When asked what he told the Forest fan in their conversation, Cooper told reporters on Friday: “I told him that all he’s done is what I have to do and what the players have to do, which is put yourself out there to try to perform.

“At such a young age, for him to have real positive experiences and negative ones will be great for him. It will set him up for life, because that’s what life is – dealing with all sorts of things which come your way.

“I can’t think of anybody better to have performed the Last Post for us. We’re proud he did it.”

Forest will travel to London to face West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday and this time, the Forest fan will be watching his team from afar as they look to claim another victory after their impressive performance against Villa.

They go into the game 15th in the table, a point behind West Ham, with a victory allowing them to overtake the Hammers.
