Chelsea supporters have hailed Djordje Petrovic after his supposed mind-games during their Carabao Cup quarter-final victory over Newcastle on penalties.
The two sides faced off in the last eight of the competition at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, with the Blues desperate for silverware after a mixed start to Mauricio Pochettino’s time at the club, while the Magpies were keen to go one better after losing to Man United in the final last season.
Callum Wilson put Newcastle ahead in the first half after a mistake from Benoit Badiashile and it looked as if that would be enough for the victory.
However, Mykhailo Mudryk seized upon an error from Kieran Trippier in injury time to level the game before the Blues won 4-2 on penalties after Petrovic saved Matt Ritchie’s decisive spot kick.
The Serbian keeper was making just his second start for the club since his £14m move from New England Revolution in the summer, with No 1 Robert Sanchez out with a knee injury he picked up against Everton earlier this month.
