Piers Morgan still has two Arsenal concerns despite ‘magnificent’ Man City win

Piers Morgan still has a couple of concerns with Arsenal despite Mikel Arteta’s side strengthening their title credentials with Sunday’s win over Manchester City. The Gunners fan is not convinced with David Raya and is also pushing for a major signing to be made in January.

Arsenal are level on points with north London rivals Tottenham at the top of the Premier League table. Both teams are now two points clear of City, who have won the last three top-flight titles.

Arsenal fell short last season despite being top for the vast majority of the campaign. They are looking to go one better this term and end a 20-year wait for a title.

It was their first victory over City in the league since December 2015, ending a run of 15 matches without a win against their opponents. It was also the first league match Arteta has not lost against Pep Guardiola since he became Gunners boss.

Morgan used to doubt Arteta’s calibre to lead Arsenal back to the top but is now convinced he is the right manager. He told talkSPORT: “I think ultimately this was a great day for Mikel Arteta.

“I think your apprentice becoming the master thing was very apt to that. I think that Arteta has really worked incredibly hard.

“When I heard some of the Arsenal fans after some of the early thrashings, I was one of those people – I didn’t think Arteta was going to make it. I thought the first two seasons were very disappointing.

“And yesterday I watched us go toe-to-toe with arguably the best team in the world, we nullified [Erling] Haaland completely, he barely got a kick. I thought we defended magnificently yesterday.”

However, Morgan does not believe Raya is an upgrade on Aaron Ramsdale. The Spaniard had a difficult first half where he almost gifted City an opening goal.

Morgan also thinks Arteta needs to sign a striker in January and believes the right player would lead Arsenal to the title. He added: “I think we’ve still got issues. I’m not convinced by Raya in goal.

“I think he was very jittery for much of the game. I don’t think he’s an upgrade, from what I’ve seen so far, on Ramsdale who must be feeling sick as a pig sitting there on the bench every day watching this stuff.

“And I still think we need a top striker and I hope we do something about that in January. But if we get in the market in January and we sign a top striker, then I think we are going to win the league.”
