Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have admitted that their side were ‘f****d’ if they did not seal promotion from the National League last season.

Phil Parkinson’s men finished top of the league, securing their place in League 2 for the 2023/24 campaign.

However, it was not as easy as they would have hoped as they faced a tough battle with Notts County before eventually seasling the title.

Speaking on the new Series of Welcome To Wrexham, which is available to watch on Disney Plus, the co-owners lifted the lid on how important promotion was to them.

McElhenney said: ‘From a financial perspective, if we do not get promoted this year, we are f*****’, to which Reynolds replied, ‘Yep, f***’.’

The pair continued to discuss their promotion season, with Hollywood star Reynolds saying: ‘We’re heavily invested in building this club, the stadium itself, and if we don’t get promoted this year, the club is completely, totally and wholly unsustainable.

‘So its really ratcheted up the pressure, not just for us but for the players on the field, the people in the community. This year we have to get promoted.’

McElhenney jumped in as he agreed with the point, doubling down on the sentiment.

‘If our goal from the very beginning was not just to win, not just to help bring some hope and optimism to the town, but to build a sustainable business, something that can continue long after we’ve gone,’ he continued.

‘For us to put them in a position where if they don’t get promoted this year, that they are no longer sustainable in any real way, is counter to what our original promises were.’

Parkinson’s Wrexham sit 7th in the League 2 table after three wins, three draws and a loss in their opening seven matches.

They will be hoping that they can put together a good run of form to challenge at the top end of the table this year as they eye back-to-back promotions.

Notts County, Wrexham’s rivals from last season, sit second in the league – and we could see the pair pull off incredible promotions this season.
