Roberto Carlos names Newcastle ace Kieran Trippier as ‘ultimate full-back’

Kieran Trippier aims to ruin PSG star Kylian Mbappe’s Newcastle trip even if son is upset

Real Madrid hero Roberto Carlos thinks Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier is the ultimate full-back. Trippier joined the Magpies for an initial £12million at the start of last year following a two-and-a-half year stint with Atletico Madrid and has helped the club go from Premier League relegation fodder to the Champions League.

Trippier has made 67 appearances for Newcastle and has bagged three goals and an incredible 17 assists for his team. The 33-year-old, who previously spent four years at Tottenham, has also been a regular for England under Gareth Southgate and has been used on both sides of defence. And former left-back Carlos has extolled the ace for his abilities.

“We can see an evolution in the role of full-backs and I was particularly impressed with Trippier as he was able to play on the left-hand side for the England national team,” Carlos told JohnnyBet.com.

“I wouldn’t have been able to play on the right of defence but in modern football you need to play on both sides. He has an amazing personality and is very good.”

Carlos also conceded that he wouldn’t excel in the modern game, with full-backs increasingly being asked to move into central midfield areas to influence attacking moves. “No, I was terrible with the ball,” the 2002 World Cup winner added.

“That’s why I was always passing to Zizou [Zinedine Zidane], David Beckham and Luis Figo. I played a lot without the ball. My thing was to close down the opposing midfielder and make space for our wingers. I liked to play a lot without the ball.”

Carlos is regarded by many football experts as one of the best left-backs in football history. So his words could certainly strike a chord with Trippier. The Newcastle right-back has become quite the attacking force at St James’ Park and has already bagged six assists in 10 Premier League matches this term. Like Carlos, the ex-Manchester City academy player takes some of his team’s free-kicks and has a delivery the top strikers dream of.

Trippier has represented England at two World Cups as well as Euro 2020 and has featured in the Three Lions’ last three matches. And he will be hoping to play a starring role at next summer’s Euro 2024 after England booked their place at the tournament following their victory over Italy last month. But the player will first be aiming to help Newcastle enjoy another successful campaign.
