Gary Neville and Roy Keane have both revealed that they still have concerns about Manchester United’s summer signing Andre Onana following his shaky start to the season. The goalkeeper has made several significant errors since arriving in the Premier League, raising questions about whether signing the ex-Inter Milan star rather than extending David De Gea’s contract was the right decision.

Scott McTominay came off of the bench to spare United’s blushes against Brentford over the weekend, scoring a brace in added time to secure all three points for the Red Devils in a 2-1 win. However, the victory did not divert attention away from another mistake by Onana.

The Cameroonian international failed to keep out a routine shot from Brentford’s Matias Jensen, despite the ball being directed reasonably close to his starting position. The goal prompted further criticism, and ex-United stars Neville and Keane are equally as worried about how Onana has got off on the wrong foot at Old Trafford.

Neville told the Stick to Football podcast: “My worry is who is that player who is helping André Onana through this tricky period as they’re all struggling and look like they’ve got heavy legs, so it does concern me how the goalkeeper is going to come out of this tough period.

“We lived through this period post Peter Schmeichel and before Edwin van der Sar, where we had Mark Bosnich then Fabien Barthez, then we had Roy Carroll, Tim Howard, Ricardo and Massimo Taibi, who are six goalkeepers we had in a short period of time, and it was unsettling. They were good lads, but you could feel the tension and the unsettled feeling of whoever was playing as you knew you didn’t have a presence behind you like Peter had.

“Then Edwin came and things became calmer as he had the experience and stature. David de Gea had issues when he first joined but he got out of it, and I think that is something that André Onana is going to have to look at.”

Keane added: “I remember speaking to different goalkeeper coaches at Manchester United and they all say that keepers make mistakes, everyone does, but it’s how you deal with it at a club like United.

“Peter Schmeichel made loads of mistakes, but he recovered very quickly. However, you’re starting to see mistakes in six or seven games in a row, that is when you start to worry.” Onana retains the faith of Erik ten Hag and the Dutch manager has jumped to the defence of his new No. 1 on several occasions over recent weeks, but if the 27-year-old fails to improve over the international break then Altay Bayindir could grow hopeful that he will be given the chance to impress soon.
