Sir Alex Ferguson ‘went mad’ at Roy Keane after he was late for Man Utd training
Despite being a man of discipline, even Roy Keane was guilty of upsetting his superiors.
Or one superior in particular, that is, after the Old Trafford icon went into detail regarding his difficult start to life under Sir Alex Ferguson. And it was tardiness, of all things, that landed Keane in the bad books of the man under whom he'd go on to win seven Premier League titles.
Keane, 52, was tearing up trees at Nottingham Forest when he caught the attention of Fergie, who spent a British transfer record of £3.75million to sign him in 1993. However, that didn't prevent the player from falling afoul of the boss at a time when he was still cementing his status among the squad.

“When I first signed for Manchester United, I was still living at my house in Nottingham," said Keane during a recent appearance on the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet. "I’d been at United a few months, and I went up to watch a reserve game, and went for one or two drinks after.
"My plan was to come back that night, but obviously everything is subject to change. I woke up in Nottingham that morning about 9:30 and got to training around 12, and obviously [Sir Alex] Ferguson went mad.
Where does Roy Keane rank among Man United's best players of all time? Let us know in the comments section below.
"I don’t think I got fined for that – Ferguson gave me a b******ing as he does, but he played me in the next game, and I scored – that bit of guilt kicked in. That wasn’t the only time I was late – I wasn’t late to training, or when I was with Ireland.”
It's fair to say Keane's attitude toward setting standards changed over time as he went on to become a paragon of perfection at the club. And it yielded great dividends, including a Champions League crown, four FA Cups and two Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year awards.

But for all that success, the relationship with Ferguson was frequently fraught over his 12-year stay at Old Trafford. In fact, Keane has since said he had "no bond" with the managerial great despite their prolific record working together.
Turning up late for training eventually became the least of their worries as Keane eventually left for Celtic in 2005 having publicly criticised a host of team-mates. And it may be that a late showing early on in his United tenure set the tone for a relationship that unravelled over the years.
