Spurs and Newcastle join race for starlet Lennon Miller after ‘contract agreed’

Tottenham and Newcastle have joined the lengthy queue of clubs jostling to sign one of Scotland’s biggest emerging talents in January. Reports suggest Motherwell midfielder Lennon Miller is in high demand after breaking into the first-team this season and his performances have caught the eye, with as many as eight clubs – including six from the Premier League – keeping a close eye on his situation.

Miller emerged as a potential star for the future having made his Motherwell debut just six days after his 16th birthday in December 2022. Less than a year after his first appearance, he is now considered a regular in Stuart Kettlewell’s side and has started nine out of their 13 league matches this season.

He could be set for a move to England in the near future, though, with several clubs interested in capturing the 17-year-old and Motherwell may struggle to hang onto their academy gem.

A report from TEAMtalk claims that Tottenham, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Brighton, Brentford and West Ham are all interested in acquiring the highly-rated youngster. Many of those clubs have sent scouts to keep a close eye on his development and it seems they have reported back positively on the young midfielder.

Miller only recently penned a new three-and-a-half-year contract in mid-November, tying him down to his hometown club until 2027.

But it remains to be seen whether that was simply a protective move to ensure the Scottish club can hold out for a higher fee, knowing that the youngster may move on despite extending his deal.

As well as there being interest from the Premier League sextet, Rangers and Celtic are said to be ‘fully aware’ of Miller’s talents and the Old Firm pair are never usually wide of the park when it comes to poaching Scotland’s best players.

Spurs may well have the jump on their rivals due to Ange Postecoglou’s Scottish connections, however.

One of Miller’s first senior appearances came against Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic last season, and it seems he left his mark on the Australian when playing for his club in the Scottish Premiership.

Newcastle have been watching the starlet for over a year, with their interest first surfacing back in September 2022. And Eddie Howe’s track record of working with young players has already convinced Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento to join the club, while 18-year-old Lewis Miley has been given first-team outings too – and that could appeal to Miller if he is looking for a quick path to the first-team.

Miller has been primarily used as a holding midfielder, but his versatility allows him to operate adequately on the right flank or even further forward in a more creative role.

He has already earned call-ups to Scotland’s Under-19s side and it may not be long until he knocking on the door for a place in Steve Clarke’s senior squad, or the Under-21s at the very least.
