Raheem Sterling has avoided a ban after being spotted throwing an object into the crowd during Chelsea's win over Tottenham.

The FA opened an investigation after footage emerged of the England forward lobbing an unidentified missile into the stands at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after it had been thrown at Cole Palmer while the midfielder was celebrating his equaliser, but concluded that Sterling will not face any punishment.

There were concerns he could face up to a three-match ban, which was the punishment dished out to both Chelsea legend Didier Drogba and Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher after they tossed coins back into the crowd during games in 2008 and 2002 respectively. Similarly, Tottenham ace Richarlison received a one-match for throwing a lit flare into the crowd during a match between Everton and Chelsea last year.

The news of Sterling's let off will come as a great relief for Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino, who will almost certainly call upon the 28-year-old when his former side Manchester City visit Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Sterling set up Nicolas Jackson's winner against Tottenham on Monday and had a goal disallowed as Chelsea sealed their first victory over a 'top six' side since January 2022.

The match will likely go down as one of the most memorable games in the Premier League history. Five goals were ruled out by VAR while Tottenham had two players sent off – something which made their decision to stick with a super-aggressive high line entertainingly baffling.

Did Sterling deserve to get punished? Let us know in the comments section below.

Dejan Kulusevski gave Tottenham an early lead when his effort deflected in off Levi Colwill, and Son Heung-min thought he'd made it 2-0, only to his see his close-range finish ruled out for offside. A reckless Destiny Udogie tackle on Sterling, which prompted just a yellow card, appeared to light a fire under Chelsea and they came roaring back into the tie.

Sterling had a goal disallowed for handball before Moises Caicedo's long-range strike was ruled out for a marginal offside, but as the officials were reviewing the latter they noticed Cristian Romero's ugly lunge at Enzo Fernandes and sent him before awarding the Blues a penalty, which was duly converted by Palmer.

Jackson then had a goal ruled out for offside before Spurs went down to nine men when Udogie felled Sterling during a counter attack. Chelsea spent the rest of the game trying to play through Tottenham's ingenious, yet simultaneously suicidal high line, and eventually took the lead on 75 minutes, with Jackson tapping home a Sterling cross.

Spurs, however, hit back almost immediately, with Eric Dier firing home a fabulous volley from a free-kick, though his effort was the fifth and final goal to be chalked off after it was ruled marginally offside. Jackson then added two more goals in injury time to complete his hat-trick and consign Tottenham to their first defeat under Ange Postecoglou.
