Steve Thompson resigned as Oldham Athletic’s interim manager after his position became untenable.
The 58-year-old spent just three-and-a-half weeks at the helm, assisted by Neil Redfearn, and left the Latics following a meeting with the club’s hierarchy on Wednesday.
Thompson took over from David Unsworth last month and his six-game spell in charge ended in three victories and three draws.
That run has put Oldham within touching distance of the National League playoff places but the former Preston No 2 handed in his resignation after talks about the club’s future.
‘We would like to place on record our thanks to Steve and Neil for their work in taking charge of the first team during recent weeks,’ an Oldham statement read.

Micky Mellon and Gary Bowyer are among the names linked with taking the reins permanently, while Thompson will not be returning to his former role as head of recruitment.
