Alcaraz has ‘too many shots’ as Evans highlights chaos of facing US Open rival
Dan Evans has claimed Carlos Alcaraz has “too many shots” and the Spaniard sometimes helps his opponent by choosing the wrong option.
The British No.2 admitted he enjoyed pitting his wits with the world No.1 during an entertaining third round defeat at the US Open.
The Spaniard combined blistering ground strokes with a deft touch around the net to win 6-2 6-3 4-6 6-3 in the main Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Asked the Wimbledon champion’s biggest strength, No.26 seed Evans said: “For me, it’s how heavy he hits the ball. Quite a lot of people hit the ball quite heavy compared to me to my backhand, but it feels heavy. I think it’s very difficult to get the ball by him.
And his variation. I definitely didn’t know what was coming next and that sort of sets you on the backfoot and, and is difficult to anticipate.
“He obviously backs you up and then can play the drop shot, can hit it through you, can come in. If anything, he probably plays too many shots. He would let me out of jail a few times playing the wrong shot, which was good for me but once he’s on a different day, if he’s putting it all together, it is difficult to stop.”

The third round tie was played in a good spirit with the two players trading laughs and smiles as well as lung-busting rallies.
“I enjoyed myself out there,” said Evans. “The result wasn’t enjoyable but you don’t have to be miserable all the time on the court. The tennis was good, it was a great atmosphere.
“I imagine there were some pretty famous people in the crowd which is a cool thing to be part of although to lose still frustrating.”
On a long highlight reel of stunning shots, Alcaraz produced an unbelievable running forehand pass which clipped the baseline break to lead 4-2 in the fourth set. Gobsmacked Evans threw his racquet into the net in disbelief..

“That pass took the wind out of my sails,” Evans said. “The majority of the time you win the point. It just seems with the top guys, it happens to them. You won’t see that very often on the outside court. That’s just how it feels. It seems to happen to those guys. He chases every ball. Obviously there’s a bit of fortune in that shot.”
Wimbledon champion Alcaraz said: “We played great points. That made us smile. Dan as well. Great to see that on a tennis court. We play to make the people happy, to entertain them and we try to make fun in the match. It’s great to have that kind of point and feel the energy.”
