Pat Cummins’ brutal three-word response to England’s World Cup plight as the Aussie skipper bursts out in laughter at old rivals

• England has won just one match out of five

Diplomacy has been thrown out the window at the ICC Cricket World Cup with Aussie skipper Pat Cummins bursting into laughter when asked about how badly England are performing at the tournament, describing their latest loss as ‘sad to see’.

England, who controversially won the last ODI World Cup on boundary count after finishing equal with New Zealand in the final, have collapsed in a heap this time around.

A shock loss to Afghanistan was just the beginning, with the English side hammered by 219 runs by South Africa.

England’s 156 all out in 33.2 overs against Sri Lanka was the ultimate insult, with their opposition easily mowing down the meagre total.

It has England staring down the barrel of an early exit from the World Cup, barring a miracle, which has seen them attract plenty of criticism including from former skipper Nasser Hussain.

‘I’ve not seen England play as badly as that,’ he said of the South Africa and Sri Lanka losses.

So when Aussie skipper Pat Cummins faced the media ahead of their clash against New Zealand on Saturday, it was only natural they would ask his thoughts on how England are going.

Australia will play England after the New Zealand clash so Cummins was asked his thoughts on their run of outs.

‘I imagine you would have been heartbroken to see England suffer defeat last night. What was your reaction to that, given you’ve got them in a couple of games time?’ a journalist asked Cummins as the Aussie skipper stifled a laugh.

‘Obviously got them in a couple of games time, so we’ll have a close look there,’ Cummins said as he tried to keep a straight face.

‘Yeah, it was sad to see.’

Cummins couldn’t hold it any longer after saying that, bursting into laughter.

‘I don’t have much more for you.’

The Aussies have bigger headaches than how England are travelling, including the possible returns of Marcus Stoinis from a calf injury and Travis Head from a fractured hand.

Both could be available for Sunday’s match against New Zealand which creates a selection conundrum, with Marnus Labuschagne likely to be the unlucky player to miss out.

Cummins said they would be assessed on Sunday and a decision made then. 

‘Don’t know to be honest,’ Cummins responded when asked about the pair’s fitness levels.

‘They both trained on game day a couple of days ago, so we’ll see.’

Cummins added that the Aussies are looking forward to locking horns with the in-form Kiwis in a rivalry that is always intense but respectful. 

‘Most of the Kiwis are pretty placid,’ Cummins said on Friday.

‘We’re pretty similar. We’ve played a lot of cricket with these guys, some of these guys are really good mates with our players.

‘If anything, it makes you want to beat your mates even more.’

‘It will be intense out there,’ he said.

Australia face new Zealand on Saturday from 4pm AEST.
