Tiger Woods’ demand spooked TaylorMade chiefs into action just before his round

By the time the Ryder Cup comes around again in two years’ time, Europe could be facing a USA team that is captained by Tiger Woods.

The Americans are still licking their wounds after losing their grip on the trophy following a humbling 16.5-11.5 defeat to Europe at Rome’s Marco Simone Golf & Country Club on Sunday. But attention has already turned to the 2025 edition at Bethpage Black in New York and all-time great Woods has already emerged as the favourite to replace Zach Johnson as Team USA captain.

Taking on the Americans in New York is intimidating enough but coming head-to-head with the biggest name in golf would only make the task twice as hard for the likes of Rory McIlory and Viktor Hovland.

Woods’ standing in the game is pretty much unmatched. So much so that the staff who work in the TaylorMade tour truck that follows golf’s biggest stars around the world were once pushed into drastic action just to meet the 15-times major champion’s needs.

In a video for Bar Stool Sports’ Fore Play pod in TikTok, staff in the truck explain how a lack of short tees, that are favoured by Woods, resulted in an emergency mini production line in the truck.

One of the truck staff said: “Why does Tiger Woods need his own tees, right? Because he refuses to use a long tee. His tee has to be a certain size.

“We were at The Open once and this truck is different to our truck in Europe. He comes on [the truck] and he’s like ‘Can I get some tees?’ He goes back to the range and I’m like ‘Guys, we don’t have any of Tiger’s tees.’

“We literally had four tees which we kept in his locker to show people who came on the truck. We had a production line and one guy was cutting the tee, the other guy was on the grinding, sharpening them, and then we’d do the next tee.

“We literally had an assembly line to make him 100 tees. Some guy comes in in and says ‘Jeez, this smells like a furniture shop in here. What are you doing?’

After explaining that the team were making short tees for Woods to suit his game, the enquirer asked: “Why don’t you tell him to just push it [further] in the ground?”

The employee telling the story continued: “I told him you’ve got two choices. You can go and tell him or you can get in this production line. He’s straight in the production line. He’s helping out!”

Woods has not appeared on tour since he was forced to withdraw from The Masters in April before undergoing surgery.
