Lance Stroll to miss Singapore Grand Prix after crash as replacement unavailable

Lance Stroll has decided against driving in the Singapore Grand Prix following his scary crash in qualifying with the Canadian ‘still sore’ from the impact. Aston Martin also faced a monumental task overnight in trying to repair the car that was completely totalled from the crash.

But Fernando Alonso will now be the sole representative for Aston Martin on the grid as Stroll’s participation in qualifying and all three practice sessions means Felipe Drugovich can’t step in. Aston Martin are now hopeful that Stroll will be able to recover in time to compete at the Japanese Grand Prix next week.

Mike Krack, Team Principal, AMF1 Team, said: “The whole team are relieved that Lance was able to step out of the car after yesterday’s accident – however, he is still feeling the after-effects of such a high-impact crash. Our priority now is that he makes a full and speedy recovery.

“Together, we have decided that he will sit out this evening’s race and instead focus fully on returning to the cockpit for next weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix.”

Stroll’s absence won’t affect the grid too much as he was already last on the timesheet before his high-speed incident. But Alonso will be hoping for a better race than his qualifying also with Aston Martin unable to capitalise on Red Bull’s woes.

He said: “It was tricky for us the whole day, FP3 we were not competitive and then in qualifying we made some setup changes. The car did improve, but only for P7. When the Red Bulls are not dominating, it feels like you are losing an opportunity to win that position.”

“Coming into the weekend we thought that Singapore could fit our package and our car. But after FP1, FP2, FP3, I think we went into qualifying knowing that Q3 was maybe already a difficult task to be in the top 10.

“So at the end, P7 feels okay. The lap in Q3 was very good, one of the best laps of qualifying of this year, in my opinion. Nothing more today on the car.”

Alonso remains third in the Drivers’ Championship ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix, but Hamilton is just six points behind his former team-mate.
