Rugby World Cup star wears Cristiano Ronaldo boxers and idolises ex-Man Utd star

Kate teases William when asked about rugby

Wales winger Louis Rees-Zammit made headlines by copying former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo’s famous celebration during the Rugby World Cup, before later revealing the lengths he goes to in order to emulate his inspiration – even wearing Ronaldo’s boxers.

The 22-year-old hotshot is one of the fastest players in world rugby, perhaps learning from Ronaldo’s exceptional pace during his first stint in the Premier League with United, but perhaps risked upsetting his icon by scoring against Ronaldo’s Portugal.

The winger kicked a grubber through and was able to run into the empty space to touch down and score the opening try in Wales’ Pool C 28-8 victory over Portugal. Not only did he risk the wrath of touching down against his idol’s homeland, Rees-Zammit then proceeded to perform Ronaldo’s ‘Siu’ celebration – which saw him subjected to boos from the Portuguese faithful.

But Rees-Zammit explained that his Ronaldo imitation was pre-planned, before going in-depth on how he copies the Al-Nassr star. “Ronaldo is my favourite player,” said Rees-Zammit. “I wear his boxers and I dress like him. And I thought why not do his celebration as well. A few of my mates back home wanted me to do it.

“They’re massive football fans and obviously we don’t play Portugal very often. So I said if I scored, I’d do it for them. I saw there was no-one in backfield and I put a grubber through and thankfully I got the bounce.”

When asked if he heard boos from the crowd, he replied: “I’m not sure. I heard a few ‘Sius’ in the background, which is good, but it wasn’t meant to be offensive or anything, you know? I absolutely love Ronaldo, he’s my idol and I thought why not do his celebration?”

A big United fan, Rees-Zammit did not want to be asked about the Red Devils’ recent 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton, however. He added: “I don’t want to talk about the Man United result!”

In 2021, Rees-Zammit explained how he wanted to emulate Ronaldo’s career by being as unpredictable as he was on the pitch. “It’s his presence on the pitch,” Rees-Zammit told The Times when asked why he idolises the 38-year-old Portuguese forward.

“Give Ronaldo the ball and you know he’s going to do something. That what I want to do. Every time I get the ball in rugby, I expect myself to do something with it.

“Whether that is make ten yards, or score, or kick into the backfield, take a high ball, whatever it is, I expect myself to perform well. That is what Ronaldo does. He is a role model. He has such high standards, and that is what I’ve got as well.”
