Casemiro was sent off for Manchester United after Andre Onana made another glaring error for the Red Devils against Galatasaray on Tuesday night. Onana has struggled to make his mark in his first few games at Old Trafford, with the 27-year-old having already been responsible for several high-profile mistakes.
Onana was humbled in pre-season when he was chipped from near the halfway line during a home friendly against Lens. He has since conceded some questionable goals in the Premier League, while he also made a glaring error against Bayern Munich to gift Leroy Sane the opener.
Another high-profile mistake came against Galatasaray on Tuesday when Onana needlessly gave the ball away to Dries Mertens, who was fouled by Casemiro as he raced into the box. The Brazilian midfielder was then shown a straight red card by the referee, although Mauro Icardi went on to put his spot-kick well wide of the post.
The incident was the latest in a string of horrible errors from Onana, who has certainly endured a turbulent start to life at United. He was targeted by the Red Devils over the summer thanks to his impressive ability with his feet, which David de Gea was often accused of lacking throughout his time at the club.
However, Onana has failed to live up to expectations thus far and will be urgently hoping to cut out the mistakes from his game as quickly as possible. Ten Hag will also be desperate for the Ivorian goalkeeper to start performing at his best again, with things not working as the Dutchman would have hoped when he signed Onana for a transfer fee of £43.8million.
United ended up falling to a disappointing defeat at the hands of Galatasaray, who came from behind twice to secure a famous 3-2 victory at Old Trafford. Rasmus Hojlund opened the scoring for the Red Devils with his first Old Trafford goal after 17 minutes before Wilfried Zaha equalised against his former club just moments later.
Hojlund struck again just after the hour mark, with the Dane firing home from close range after a marauding run into the Galatasaray box from the halfway line. Galatasaray went on to level up again via Kerem Akturkoglu shortly before Icardi missed from the penalty spot following Onana’s error.
The Argentine striker made amends with just nine minutes remaining, scooping the ball into the corner after taking advantage of a lapse in concentration from United’s defenders. The result marked the Red Devils’ second defeat in as many Champions League matches this season, leaving them at the bottom of Group A without a single point on the board.
