Brighton 1-1 Burnley: Simon Adingra rescues a point

Brighton 1-1 Burnley: Simon Adingra rescues a point for Roberto De Zerbi’s side after Wilson Odobert opener

  • Wilson Odobert gave Burnley the lead just before half-time with a fine finish
  • Simon Adingra equalised with a header midway through the second half
  • It will do Arsenal no harm at all to have Arteta out of sight at Villa Park – It’s All Kicking Off

Simon Adingra came to Brighton’s rescue, heading in a late equaliser to earn them a point against Burnley and keep their remarkable scoring run going.

Vincent Kompany’s Burnley led through Wilson Odobert’s first-half strike and were managing to just about keep Brighton at bay as the clock ticked towards full time.

But Brighton’s incessant pressure finally paid off with just 13 minutes left when Adingra nodded in the Seagulls leveller.

As a result that made it 32 consecutive Premier League games that Brighton have scored in, a feat only achieved by three other teams Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool.

The frustration for Roberto De Zerbi was his side were unable to score at last one more given all the chances they created.

There might have been some regret for Vincent Kompany too even though every point will help.

His side spent most of the game with their backs to the wall and were indebted to their goalkeeper James Trafford for a string of saves.

But they led for so long and the finish line was not too far away when they were eventually pegged back.

A strong start and finish to the first 45 minutes left Burnley halfway towards another precious three points.

They began on the front foot with Johann Gudmundsson curling just wide of the far post after a powerful burst from midfield from Sander Berge.

And they ended it with winger Wilson Odobert succeeding where Gudmundsson failed.

He cut in from the opposing flank, stepped away from Pascal Gross and Simon Adingra before finding the top corner with a shot that took a slight touch off James Milner.

In between those two attempts for Burnley it was Brighton who looked the likelier scorers.

Adam Lallana’s scuffed shot was heading perfectly for Evan Ferguson until Charlie Taylor appeared to kick clear.

Gross looped a header onto the roof of the net and had a near-post shot kicked away by James Trafford before Taylor came to Burnley’s rescue by blocking Adringra’s shot.

Milner was denied by the busy Trafford, Jan Paul Van Hecke sent a thumping header just wide and Mahmoud Dahoud slashed over from outside the box.

But, for all their attempts, Brighton found themselves one down at the break.

It was nearly two soon after the restart when Odobert twisted this way and that to create space to shoot, saw his effort stopped by Bart Verbruggen and Jay Rodriguez unable to turn in the rebound despite two attempts.

Vincent Kompany’s frustration at such a presentable opportunity being spurned was evident. Especially with Brighton increasingly dominant after bringing on Kaoru Mitoma.

It was a while before their possession translated into a dangerous attempt on Burnley’s goal when Mitoma curled over just after the hour. Evan Ferguson then headed Van Hecke’s cross wide before failing to make the correct connection when another cross from Mitoma came his way.

Brighton’s wait looked to be over when Joao Pedro’s flick on from Gross’s cross ran through to Adingra.

It was a disappointing afternoon for the home side who haven’t matched last season’s heights

But when the ball bounced the unmarked winger’s way, Trafford was quick off his line to block his shot.

Never mind. Just a couple of minutes later and from the same source, a left-wing Gross cross, another opportunity arrived for Adingra and this time he took it with a downward header.

There was plenty of time left for a winner. During a goalmouth scramble, following two headed attempts from Jack Hinshelwood, their midweek matchwinner against Brentford, a skidding effort from Billy Gilmour and further chances for Ferguson and Mitoma Brighton almost got one.

But Trafford in particular had other ideas.
