Moises Caicedo has revealed that a conversation with a Chelsea team-mate helped him make the choice to join the Blues instead of Liverpool.

Chelsea had been linked with Caicedo for a number of months, when Liverpool unexpectedly launched a £110m bid which was accepted by Brighton.

Caicedo though declined to enter talks with the Reds as the midfielder and his advisors decided London was their preferred destination.

He instead joined Chelsea in a British record £115m deal, and has now revealed that a midfield partner helped him make the move.

Appearing on Sky Sports’ Big Interview, Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez revealed they had held talks before the move was made official.

The Argentine World Cup winner said: “I called and told him that he had to accept and come because Chelsea is a great and ambitious club.

‘And I have to thank God for giving me the chance to play alongside him at Chelsea because we all know the great player he is, but he is also a fantastic person, so I’m thankful he chose Chelsea.’

Recalling the conversation, Caicedo said: ‘It was a nice chat. I mean, the fact that a world champion was phoning you, one of the best midfielders in the world.

‘Receiving that call was very nice and he convinced me to come here.

‘He said it was a great club, that there are many young players, there was a togetherness here.

‘I have always enjoyed the bond in a team because I think that, if there is that bond, we can deal with any situation we may face: pressure, everything. So, that’s what motivated me to come here.

‘Now, I’m enjoying playing alongside him, in training as well, in rondos. We are always together. So, I’m very happy and I’m trying to do things better every day, as Enzo said, to be a good example for everyone at the club.’

Despite spending over £1bn on transfers since Todd Boehly’s arrival, Chelsea have struggled to climb back to the top of the domestic game.

After finishing in the bottom half of the table last year, Chelsea have won just four games out of 11 in the Premier League this term, and sit tenth in the standings.

Chelsea picked up a 4-1 victory on Mauricio Pochettino’s return to Tottenham on Monday and face another stern test with Man City on Sunday.
