Chelsea make ‘final decision’ on signing Tottenham’s No 1 striker target

Chelsea have decided not to pursue a transfer for Feyenoord hotshot Santiago Gimenez in January, according to reports. The Blues have been strongly linked with the Mexican but will supposedly avoid making a move in the winter window.

Gimenez’s excellent form in the Eredivisie has caught the attention of Europe’s top clubs. Chelsea and Premier League rivals Tottenham have both been credited with an interest in the 22-year-old.

Chelsea are desperate for a prolific No 9 having seen Nicolas Jackson struggle in his first few months in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Spurs are yet to replace Harry Kane with an elite No 9.

But while Spurs have reportedly been keeping tabs on Gimenez’s progress in the Netherlands, Chelsea are not convinced by a January move for the striker. They will reportedly pass up the opportunity to sign him.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are familiar with Gimenez’s situation and could sign the star for around £39million. But there is no ‘concrete’ interest from the Blues in terms of completing a move.

However, Spurs have reportedly watched the former Cruz Azul prospect ‘multiple times’ and could negotiate a deal with Feyenoord. The North Londoners are keen to sign a striker in January due to Richarlison’s failure to fill the huge void vacated by club icon Harry Kane’s departure.

Gimenez has scored 13 goals in 12 Eredivisie appearances this season, bagging a further two strikes in the Champions League. Feyenoord are keen to keep their star man but appreciate that his form will attract interest from Europe’s biggest clubs.

It has been widely speculated that Chelsea might sign a new forward to lift the scoring burden from summer signing Nicolas Jackson. The Blues new boy has struggled for consistency since his arrival, despite scoring a hat-trick against nine-man Tottenham.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino brutally told Jackson that he needed to improve after he scored that treble, insisting that his striker should have scored six times in the game. “He’s still young, needs to improve. Okay scored three goals, should have scored six,” the Argentine said.

“The most important thing is to keep him calm and relaxed and he is going to improve with time. Nights like Monday help him not to be too nervous and approach a game in a different way.”
