David Beckham classy as Inter Miami owner makes private Harry Maguire gesture

David Beckham has offered his private support to under-fire Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, according to reports. Maguire has endured a difficult start to the season after he was stripped of the Reds Devils captaincy by Erik ten Hag as a consequence of indifferent form during the previous campaign.

He also lost his place in the starting XI and has only made one substitute appearance for United so far this season.

Despite his lack of game time, he was still selected by Gareth Southgate for England’s EURO 2024 qualifier against Ukraine and friendly versus Scotland. But he was the unfortunate scorer of an own goal at Hampden Park, piling more pressure on his already burdened shoulders.

In the wake of the incident, Magquire’s own mother took to social media to criticse supporters who had hammered her son with abuse online.

One former player who knows what it is like to feel the wrath of disgruntled England supporters is ex-United legend Beckham, who became public enemy No. 1 when he got himself sent off against Argentina during the 1998 World Cup Round of 16 in France.

And according to The Sun, the Inter Miami owner has now reached out to Maguire, offering him some much-welcome support during a difficult moment for the 30-year-old. A source told the outlet: “Becks told Harry to keep his head up. He knows what it’s like to be targeted.

“He got through it and is certain Harry can do the same. Getting a message from someone like Becks meant the world to Harry.”

Maquire has experienced brutal widespread criticism on social media and was reportedly sent a bomb threat in April last year.

Following the Scotland match, Three Lions boss Southgate made a passionate defence of his player, describing him as a “tower of strength”. He also claimed that he had “never known a player to be treated the way he is”.

Maguire came close to joining West Ham United in the summer, but a deal to take him to the capital fell through, leaving him currently as fourth-choice centre-back at United behind Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof.

Maguire’s mother, Zoe Maguire, wrote on Instagram: “As a mum seeing the level of negative and abusive comments in which my son is receiving from some fans, pundits and the media is disgraceful and totally unacceptable to any walk of life never mind someone who works his socks off for club and country.

“I was there in the stand as usual, it’s not acceptable what’s been created, over nothing. I understand that in the football world there are ups and downs, positives and negatives but what Harry receives has gone far beyond ‘football’.”
